One day Miss Turkey, Loose Crown to Coup Tweet

Those were the tweets that landed 18 year old Itir Esen in trouble with Miss Turkey pageant organizers in Istanbul, turkey. She allegedly tweeted the comments on July 15, marking one year anniversary of last year coup against the Erdogan Government.

“We are sad to announce that we have reached a conclusion that the tweet was posted by Itir Esen. It is not possible for the Miss Turkey Organization, whose aim is to promote Turkey worldwide and to contribute to its image, to accept such posting.” The organisation said in a statement released by Can Sandikcioglu, who is the head of the Organisation. They claimed that the tweet came to their knowledge after the competition. It took them hours of contemplation to arrive at their decision to dethrone Miss Itir.

Esen had offered explanation regarding the tweets on her Instagram handle. She wrote that the tweets were not borne out of any political inclination or support to the alleged coup plotters who attempted to topple the Erdogan Government. She confessed it was a carless act from her and apologized if it was misleading. She had long deleted the tweets.

“ My family raised me by teaching to respect our homeland and nation. I do not have a character that could show respect to our martyrs.” she continued.
Organizers of the pageant explained they only discovered the tweet after the contest. They offered that the tweet ridicules the memory of 250 people that died during the military coup last year. Their tribunal found the social media statement unbefitting of a her new status and promptly dethroned Esen a day after she was crowned

Going by new results, the runner-up 18 year old, Asli Sumen was elevated to replace Esen. She will represent the country in Miss Word to be held in China November 18. The second runner-up, Pinar Tartan will now be the runner-up. She will represent Turkey at Miss Universe in United States. And Yasemin Coklar who was the fourth now becomes the second runner-up and will represent Turkey in Miss Supranational.

In a similar event, former 2016 Miss Turkey Merve Buyuksarac was accused of posting a derogatory messages on the social media. The messages as alleged, hurled insults at President Erdogan. An Istanbul Court later found her guilty of the charges. Her 14 months in prison sentence was commuted to be served only if she would repeat such offence in the next 5 years. She lost her crown to to the incident as well.

Her lawyer Emre Telci, maintains that “Merve was prosecuted for sharing a posting that did not belong to her” the court sentenced the 27 year old for sharing a satirical poem on her Instagram account in 2014.
Turkey has been under going series of government crack down on individuals and organizations the government accuse of taking part in the aborted coup of 2016. Thousands of individuals and military personnel accused by the Turkish government has been prosecuted and jailed for the part the coup.
